When you hear the word aquarium maintenance, if you’re like me, you have images come back of your father spilling buckets in the hallway of your childhood home while your mother curses in the background. Hoses everywhere, tangled airlines and cords, salt creep all over everything, and the algae–not the most positive experience. Aquarium maintenance usually breaks down into water changes to control things like nitrate and other toxins, the changing of media like carbon to ensure water quality, algae control to keep the tank looking fresh, and of course fish and/or coral nutrition and monitoring to ensure happy livestock. The health of your equipment is as important as the health of your tank inhabitants, and in turn must be monitored and checked frequently as well. Recognition of an issue before it becomes a problem is one of the most valuable tools in anything, and especially in aquariums.
